Topic:

Optimizing Industrial Process: A Hands-on PLC Workshop

The workshop was conducted by an experienced Resource Person with strong expertise in industrial automation and PLC systems. The Resource Person provided practical training on PLC hardware, wiring, and ladder logic programming, including motor control, timers, and counters. Advanced topics such as sequential control, HMI integration, and troubleshooting were also covered.

Through hands-on sessions and real-time industrial examples, participants gained practical knowledge in designing, implementing, and maintaining automation systems. The Resource Person’s industry-oriented approach helped students develop technical skills applicable to academic projects, hackathons, and professional practice.

Agenda

On Day 1, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of industrial automation and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). The session covered PLC architecture, hardware components, input-output modules, and industrial wiring practices along with safety guidelines. Participants gained hands-on experience in connecting sensors, actuators, and control devices to PLC systems.

Basic ladder logic programming was explained, including contacts, coils, and logical operations. Practical exercises helped participants understand motor control, signal processing, and simple automation tasks. The use of timers, counters, and basic instructions was demonstrated through real-time examples.

By the end of Day 1, participants developed a clear understanding of PLC hardware, wiring, and basic programming skills required to design and implement simple industrial automation systems.

On Day 2, the focus was on advanced PLC programming and industrial process optimization. Participants learned sequential control, interlocking systems, and advanced ladder logic techniques. HMI integration and basic industrial communication concepts were introduced for effective system monitoring.

Hands-on projects based on real industrial scenarios enabled participants to design complete automation solutions. The session also included troubleshooting methods, fault diagnosis, and maintenance practices to improve system reliability.

By the end of Day 2, participants gained practical expertise in advanced automation applications, process optimization, and problem-solving skills for modern industrial environments

The IEEE PES Chapter remains committed to organizing skill-oriented workshops that provide practical, hands-on training, enabling students to gain industry-relevant knowledge and experience in PLC programming, industrial automation, and process control for their academic projects, mini and major projects, and competitive platforms such as hackathons
