Kunnekter Fizzix - Increasing Transmission Line Capacity with High-Temperature Connectors
Carl Tamm, founder and President of Classic Connectors, Inc., www.classicconnectors.com [classicconnectors.com] and the ClampStar product line will offer a presentation on "high temperature" applications of transmission line connectors, which details the reason that most compression connectors would not pass testing at 250C. This presentation lays out the reasons, and a solution is offered, allowing utilities to rate exisiting ACSS lines at 250C using their shunts, or reconductor, or build new lines using these connectors for use on ACSS, for which there is really no solution today other than this.
All Southern Company utilities have been using ClampStar for over 15 years, both on large projects and also smaller maintenance applications. Georgia Power's first major project covered all the splices on the Loopers Farm - Rome 230kV, which was Condor SD conductor, in December of 2010. The ClampStar units in the air today number in the hundreds of thousands. They have never had a failure.
Carl will detail the hard science and engineering validation behind the limits of legacy connectors, specifically related to high temperatures operations, i.e., temperatures exceeding 93°C, which exemplify the reasons that legacy connectors are not capable of performing on conductors which exceed temperatures much beyond 125°C. A solution will be presented, accompanied by test data substantiating performance testing at 335°C and 390°C conductor temperatures.
