An Introduction to RF Power Amplifier Design: from Communications to EMC Testing
Synopsis:
In this talk, we are going to explore the basic principles and engineering disciplines involved in the design and fabrication of high-power RF amplifiers for various applications, including wireless communications, electromagnetic pulses, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing. The design process encompasses semiconductor device selection, amplifier operating modes, passive components, and power combining. Furthermore, we will present a fundamental understanding of RF engineering, illustrating how a simple RF circuit could become a complex challenge during an amplifier design process, and how to overcome these practical difficulties.
Biography:
Dr. Ramon A. Beltran is a Principal Design Engineer at Ophir RF Inc., specializing in high-power, high-efficiency amplifiers. With a PhD from CICESE Research Center, Ensenada, Mexico, his career includes engineering roles at Qorvo, Skyworks, and Qualcomm. Dr. Beltran is the chair of the Microwaves Theory and Techniques Society chapter 20 (MTT-20) for the HF/VHF and UHF Technologies. He holds 12 U.S. patents and is a frequent presenter at the International Microwave Symposium.
