The IEEE-KC PES/IAS Joint Chapter is excited to announce its Technical Seminar Series for Spring 2026!

This year we will again have an in-person hybrid format, although we will also offer a virtual option. Please see below for location details.

Topics for this year are:

  • April 7 (Tuesday) - Large Load Day
  • April 14 (Tuesday) - Industrial Applications Day
  • April 21 (Tuesday) - Inverter-Based Resources Day 
  • April 28 (Tuesday) - Motor Bus Transfer and DER Modernization Day (Virtual Only)

Fee Schedule:

  • In-person registration cost (IEEE members): $5 with PDH
  • In-person registration cost (non-IEEE members): $10 with PDH
  • Online registration cost: $5 with PDH
  • Student: $0

Agenda:

Doors to the in-person event open at 5:00pm. Dinner will be served at approximately 5:00pm.

The evening's seminar will include two or three presentations and will begin promptly at 6:00pm CDT. Each presentation will include one or two breaks, as well as a short quiz and survey. Completion of the quiz will be required to receive a PDH certificate.

Mahfooz Hilaly of Burns & McDonnell

Topic:

DC Arc Flash Hazard and Analysis for IBRs

Biography:

Mahfooz Hilaly is an Associate Electrical Engineer at Burns & McDonnell. He has 30 years of experience in the power industry.

Mr. Hilaly specializes in protection and control design, power system studies, relay settings, and system coordination. His special interests include arc-flash studies, harmonic analysis, and renewable energy.

Mr. Hilaly obtained his master's degree in electrical engineering from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. Before joining Burns & McDonnell in 2012, he worked for Power Engineers for over six years.

Mr. Hilaly is a Professional Engineer and a Senior IEEE Member. He is the Chair of the IEEE PES/IAS KC Chapter. He presented a paper at CIGRE and delivered presentations at MIPSYCON & IA-NA Conferences and IEEE PES/IAS seminars. He has contributed to several IEEE PSRC working groups and is currently involved in the IAS P3546 working group of Substation Arc Flash Study. As a member of the working committee, he was involved in developing IEEE Standard C37.245-2018, "Protective Relaying for Phase-Shifting Transformers."
