Enhancing Grid Stability with STATCOM
Summary:
This presentation provides an overview of STATCOM technology, focusing on its operating principles and the primary components that enable dynamic reactive power support. It explains how STATCOMs regulate voltage and support grid stability through power electronics–based control. The presentation also highlights recent advancements in STATCOM technology, including the integration of energy storage and grid-forming capabilities, and discusses their role in enhancing overall power system performance and stability.
Speaker Bio:
Andrew Bailey is the FACTS & HVDC product manager for Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc. (MEPPI). At MEPPI Mr. Bailey has contributed to the design, execution, and operational support of numerous Static Var Compensator (SVC), Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), and Fixed Series Capacitor (FSC) systems. He earned a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 2013 and earned a Master of Engineering Degree in Power Systems from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2020. He is registered as a Professional Engineer in North Carolina and is an active member of IEEE Power and Energy Society and NGN member of Cigre.
