The IEEE student branch hosted a technical talk titled “From RTL to Silicon: How Chips Become Real” by Dr. Srinivas Rahul Sapireddy in Williams Hall 113 on April 6th from 1:00–2:00 PM. During the session, Dr. Sapireddy explained the process of how semiconductor chips are designed and developed, starting from the RTL (Register Transfer Level) stage and moving all the way to physical silicon implementation. He discussed important steps in the chip design flow, including design concepts, circuit layouts, and how abstract hardware designs are transformed into real manufacturable chips. The talk gave attendees a better understanding of VLSI design, chip development, and the practical challenges involved in turning a digital design into working silicon.

Biography:

Dr. Srinivas Rahul Sapireddy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Illinois State University. His research focuses on communication signal processing and efficient machine learning methods for wireless signal analysis, with an emphasis on lightweight, hardware-aware algorithms for resource-constrained platforms. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri–Kansas City, as well as an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Springfield. Before joining Illinois State University, he served as an Instructor at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, where he taught courses such as ASIC Physical Design and Testing, Engineering Computation, Analog IC Design, and Logic Design. His teaching and research interests include digital logic design, communication systems, digital signal processing, wireless communications, ASIC design, RF modulation classification, and hardware-aware machine learning.
