IEEE UJ-AQ Student Branch & WIE Affinity Group Present: Open Source Hardware & IoT Embedded Systems

This is a comprehensive, 3-day entry-level workshop designed to introduce students to the world of IoT and embedded systems. We move from digital simulation to hands-on hardware construction, emphasizing collaborative learning and Open Source principles. No prior electronics experience is required.

Organized by: IEEE Student Branch - University of Jordan, Aqaba
In Collaboration with: Jordan Open Source Association (JOSA)
Presenter: Zaid Qtaish

Agenda

Day 1: The Digital Sandbox (Simulation)

Session Title: Introduction to Arduino & Simulation
Objective: Introduce core Arduino concepts and build initial understanding through simulation tools.

Topics Covered:

  • Overview of Arduino and its industrial applications
  • Introduction to Tinkercad Circuits (simulation environment)
  • Basics of Arduino programming:

    • void setup()
    • void loop()

Practical Activity:

  • Blink Challenge

    • Build a virtual LED circuit
    • Apply basic coding and wiring logic

Day 2: Hardware Interaction (The Lab)

Session Title: Working with Real Hardware
Objective: Enable students to interact with physical components and understand real-world implementation.

Topics Covered:

  • Team formation (3–5 students per team)
  • Introduction to hardware components:

    • Arduino board
    • Breadboard
    • Jumper wires

  • Guided experiments:

    • Digital Input: Button interaction
    • Analog Input: Potentiometer for LED brightness control

Practical Activity:

  • Hands-on circuit building and testing
  • Observing real hardware behavior

Milestone:

  • Teams select a project for Day 3 from a predefined list

Day 3: The Project Build

Session Title: Project Development & Demonstration
Objective: Apply knowledge to design, build, and present a complete Arduino-based system.

Main Activity:

  • Team-based project development with instructor support

Project Options:

  1. Automated Traffic Light System
  2. Digital Piano (Buzzer & Buttons)
  3. Alarm System (Buzzer + LDR Sensor)

Final Activities:

  • Project demonstrations
  • Troubleshooting and debugging session
  • Feedback and discussion
