Title of Talk: Towards Zero-Touch 6G Networks: RIS, AI-Native Intelligence, and Proactive Wireless Decision Making

Abstract: The vision of 6G extends far beyond enhanced connectivity, aiming to enable fully autonomous, intelligent, and adaptive wireless ecosystems capable of supporting mission-critical services, immersive applications, and massive machine-type communications. Achieving this vision requires a paradigm shift from conventional reactive network operation toward zero-touch networks that can sense, learn, reason, and make decisions with minimal human intervention. This talk explores the convergence of sensing, communication, and intelligence as the foundation of future zero-touch 6G networks. It highlights how distributed intelligence, AI-native architectures, and real-time environmental awareness can transform wireless systems into proactive and self-optimizing infrastructures. The lecture will discuss emerging techniques for proactive mobility and handover management, intelligent IoT data collection, and federated learning frameworks that enable scalable and privacy-preserving network intelligence across highly distributed environments. The talk will further examine the role of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) in enabling programmable wireless environments capable of dynamically adapting propagation conditions to enhance coverage, reliability, and energy efficiency. Practical considerations, including scalability, sustainability, trustworthiness, and implementation challenges, will also be discussed in the context of next-generation wireless systems. By bridging advances in AI, sensing, and wireless communications, this lecture presents a holistic perspective on the evolution toward autonomous 6G ecosystems and outlines key research directions shaping the future of intelligent connectivity.

Lina Mohjazi of University of Glasgow

Biography:

Dr. Lina Mohjazi is an Associate Professor at the James Watt School of Engineering and Deputy Director of the EPSRC Robotics AI for Net Zero (RAINZ) Centre for Doctoral Training at the University of Glasgow, UK. She is an internationally recognised expert in 6G wireless technologies, AI-driven autonomous networks, IoT, and sustainable communications. She received her PhD from the University of Surrey, conducted at the 5G/6G Innovation Centre. Dr. Mohjazi has co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, edited a book, and delivered more than 25 invited keynotes, tutorials, and panels at flagship IEEE events and chapters. She plays a leading role in shaping the global 6G ecosystem, serving on IEEE 6G standardization (P1955), contributing to national cyber-physical infrastructure strategy through the Royal Academy of Engineering, and as a member of One6G. She also serves/has served as Associate Editor for multiple IEEE journals, including IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Communications Letters (received Exemplary Editor Award 2023), and IEEE Open Journal of Communications. She served as Guest Editor for IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology and IEEE Internet of Things Magazine. A passionate advocate for diversity and leadership, Dr. Mohjazi is the founder of the globally recognised Women in Smart Communications (WiSC) initiative, a Fellow of the Women’s Engineering Society, and a Senior Member of IEEE. Her impact has been recognised through prestigious honours, such as the IEEE Women in Communications Engineering (WICE) Early Achievement Award (2025) and inclusion among the “100 Brilliant and Inspiring Women in 6G" (2024, 2025, 2026). She was recognized as a UK Exceptional Global Talent by the Royal Academy of Engineering (2020). She has also been endorsed as a “High-Level Foreign Talent” by the Chinese Government (2023). She is IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer (2026-2027).
