From 5G to 6G: Testbeds, Validation, and Intelligent Vehicular Networking

The evolution from 5G to 5G-Advanced and, ultimately, 6G is redefining the future of intelligent transportation systems and connected mobility. Emerging applications such as cooperative autonomous driving, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications, digital twins, AI-native networking, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), edge intelligence, and non-terrestrial networks demand communication infrastructures that deliver ultra-low latency, high reliability, massive scalability, and pervasive intelligence.

This Distinguished Lecture provides a comprehensive overview of the architecture, enabling technologies, and key innovations driving the evolution from 5G to 6G networks. Particular emphasis is placed on how these technologies support next-generation vehicular communications, including cooperative perception, autonomous mobility, smart infrastructure, and intelligent transportation ecosystems.

The lecture also presents practical methodologies for testing and validating 5G-Advanced and 6G networks using cloud-native, Open RAN, and federated testbed platforms. Topics include end-to-end network experimentation, network slicing, AI-assisted network management, edge computing, performance evaluation, interoperability testing, and standards-driven validation methodologies. Real-world demonstrations and deployment experiences illustrate how advanced testbeds accelerate innovation while bridging the gap between research, standardization, and commercial deployment.

Attendees will gain practical insights into designing, deploying, and validating future mobile networks capable of supporting reliable, scalable, and secure connected mobility services for the next generation of intelligent transportation systems.

Al-Dulaimi

Biography:

Anwer Al-Dulaimi is currently Director of Strateg - Connectivity and Industry 4.0 at Veltris, Toronto, Canada. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Brunel University, London, U.K., in 2012 after obtaining M.Sc. and B.Sc. honours degrees in communication engineering. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Toronto, sponsored by Blackberry’s advanced research team.

In his current role, Anwer is developing and leading long-term strategic plans for adoption and implementation of 5G, 6G, and Industry 4.0 technologies. He is the chair of the newly established IEEE 5G/6G Innovation Testbed project working to develop a convergent testing platform for E2E network innovations. He is the chair of the IEEE 1932.1 ‘Standard for Licensed/Unlicensed Spectrum Interoperability in Wireless Mobile Network’. He is also representing Veltris in many industrial forums and collaborative projects. He has published many papers, edited books, and developed patents focusing on new generations of mobile networking technologies. He is the Editor of IEEE Future Networks Series on 6G published by IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine, editor of Vehicular Networking Series in IEEE Communication Standards Magazine and guest editor of many other IEEE series issues.

His research interests include 5G/6G networks, cloud computing, IoT and cybersecurity. He is a Fellow of the British Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET), registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) by the British Engineering Council since 2010. He is a voting member of Mobile Communication Networks Standards Committee (MobiNet-SC) and IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer
