2026 Young Professionals (YP) Local Activities in Collaboration with the IEEE Sensors Council Interdisciplinary Seasonal School, IEEE HTB, and IEEE Signal Processing Society

The 2026 Young Professionals (YP) local activities initiative aims to strengthen professional development, technical capacity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and industry engagement among students, young professionals, researchers, and early-career engineers in Uganda and the wider East African region. The initiative is implemented in collaboration with the 2026 Interdisciplinary Seasonal School organized under the IEEE Sensors Council, the IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board (HTB), and the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS).

The program brings together participants from different IEEE Societies and technical disciplines to explore emerging technologies and their practical applications in addressing regional development challenges. Key focus areas include signal processing, smart sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), photonics, remote sensing, environmental monitoring, water resources management, disaster risk reduction, and climate resilience.

The interdisciplinary seasonal school will feature technical presentations, expert-led sessions, practical demonstrations, and discussions on emerging technologies and their applications. These activities will provide participants with opportunities to exchange knowledge, strengthen technical skills, and understand how engineering innovations can contribute to humanitarian development and sustainable solutions.

A key component of the initiative will be collaborative technical activities in which participants work in multidisciplinary teams to explore practical challenges and develop innovative solution concepts. Through peer learning, technical mentorship, and guided discussions, participants will gain experience in applying engineering principles, signal processing, sensing technologies, and AI-based approaches to real-world problems.

The initiative will also promote professional networking, mentorship, leadership development, and engagement with experienced IEEE members. These activities are intended to help young professionals establish meaningful connections, identify career and research opportunities, and participate more actively in IEEE technical communities and local chapter activities.

The 2026 local activities will be delivered in collaboration with the IEEE Sensors Council Interdisciplinary Seasonal School in Uganda, with contributions from IEEE Young Professionals, the IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board, and the IEEE Signal Processing Society. This collaborative approach will encourage participation across technical disciplines, strengthen cooperation among IEEE organizational units, and increase opportunities for students and young professionals to engage in engineering innovation and humanitarian technology development.

The program is expected to engage students, young professionals, researchers, early-career engineers, and other relevant stakeholders. Expected outcomes include:

• Increased awareness of IEEE Young Professionals activities, membership opportunities, and professional development resources.

• Stronger collaboration among IEEE Young Professionals, the IEEE Sensors Council, the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board, and other participating IEEE communities.

• Improved technical knowledge and interdisciplinary understanding of emerging engineering technologies.

• Increased opportunities for mentorship, professional networking, research collaboration, and career development.

• Development of innovative engineering concepts addressing local and regional challenges.

• Greater participation of students and young professionals in IEEE technical, humanitarian, and community engagement activities.

• Enhanced visibility and impact of IEEE initiatives in Uganda and the wider East African region.

This initiative supports the objectives of IEEE Young Professionals by promoting professional growth, leadership, networking, and technical engagement among early-career professionals. Through collaboration with the IEEE Sensors Council Interdisciplinary Seasonal School, IEEE HTB, and IEEE SPS, the initiative will strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation, encourage humanitarian technology innovation, and contribute to the development of a connected and capable engineering community in Uganda and East Africa.
