GeoAI & Industry Innovation Clinic: Bridging Remote Sensing Research and Operational Impact in East Africa is a capacity-building and industry engagement initiative designed to connect students, young professionals, researchers, and early-career engineers with leaders from the geospatial industry. The event seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world applications of remote sensing, artificial intelligence (AI), and geospatial technologies across East Africa.

The program will feature keynote presentations by IEEE GRSS Distinguished Lecturers and industry experts, panel discussions on emerging trends in GeoAI and Earth observation, and technical sessions showcasing innovative applications in agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster risk management, smart cities, water resources, and climate resilience.

A central component of the event will be the Industry Innovation Clinic, where participants will work in multidisciplinary teams to address practical challenges presented by industry partners and government agencies. Through guided mentorship, participants will develop solution concepts, prototype workflows, and implementation roadmaps using remote sensing data, GIS, machine learning, and AI tools. These collaborative sessions will expose participants to real industry needs while strengthening their technical and problem-solving skills.

The event will also include structured networking sessions, mentorship circles, career development discussions, and an industry exhibition to facilitate meaningful interactions between participants, employers, startups, research institutions, and technology companies. These engagements are expected to foster internships, research collaborations, mentorship relationships, and future joint innovation projects.

Originally planned as a three-month initiative, the event has been rescheduled to a one-day program on 27 August 2026. It will be conducted as part of the IEEE Sensors Council Seasonal School in Uganda and organized under the IEEE GRSS Young Professionals (YP) Initiative in partnership with the IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board (HTB). This collaborative approach will bring together participants from multiple IEEE Societies and organizational units, strengthening interdisciplinary engagement and maximizing the event's regional impact.

The event is expected to engage 60–80 participants, including students, young professionals, researchers, industry practitioners, and government representatives. Expected outcomes include:

  • Increased awareness of IEEE GRSS and its opportunities among students, young professionals, and industry stakeholders.
  • Stronger collaboration between academia, industry, government, and the IEEE GRSS community.
  • Development of pilot GeoAI and remote sensing project concepts addressing regional challenges.
  • Creation of mentorship networks and internship opportunities for participants.
  • Enhanced technical capacity in applying remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and geospatial technologies to solve real-world problems.

This initiative directly supports the objectives of the IEEE GRSS Chapters, Industry, and Operational Support (CIO) Program by promoting industry engagement, encouraging technology transfer, strengthening academia–industry partnerships, and increasing the visibility and impact of IEEE GRSS across the East African region through strategic collaboration with the IEEE Sensors Council and IEEE HTB.
