IEEE-Try Engineering STEM Grant Event: Lab2Life

Lab2Life is a STEM outreach and experiential learning initiative designed to bridge the gap between
laboratory concepts and real-life applications. The project aims to help students understand how
fundamental principles of science, electrical engineering, and technology learned in classrooms and
laboratories are directly applied to solve everyday problems and societal challenges.
Despite strong theoretical and laboratory exposure, many students struggle to connect experiments
with their practical relevance. Lab2Life addresses this gap by transforming conventional lab
experiments into application-driven demonstrations, hands-on activities, and mini-projects that mirror
real-world use cases such as energy efficiency, smart systems, safety devices, and sustainability
solutions. Through interactive sessions, students explore how concepts like Ohm’s law power
household electronics, sensors enable automation, mathematics supports decision-making, and
engineering design leads to impactful innovations.
The project includes live demonstrations, design challenges, project showcases, and career guidance
sessions, encouraging inquiry-based learning, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Special
emphasis is placed on low-cost, sustainable, and socially relevant solutions, aligning the initiative with
global Sustainable Development Goals such as Quality Education, Clean Energy, and Industry &
Innovation.
Background and Need:
STEM education has traditionally emphasized theoretical knowledge and prescribed experiments,
often limiting students’ ability to visualize their practical significance. Recent educational frameworks
and accreditation bodies stress the importance of experiential learning, interdisciplinary thinking, and
industry relevance. Lab2Life builds on this evolving pedagogy by contextualizing laboratory learning
within real-life scenarios, making STEM education more engaging and meaningful.
The project also draws inspiration from successful STEM outreach programs and IEEE/WIE initiatives
that promote innovation, inclusivity, and hands-on learning. By fostering curiosity and confidence—
especially among young learners and aspiring engineers—Lab2Life aims to nurture future-ready
graduates equipped with practical skills, innovation mindset, and awareness of real-world applications.
Overall, Lab2Life serves as a scalable, impactful model to transform “learning in the lab” into
“solutions for life,” benefiting students, educators, and the broader community.
