IEEE Energy Industry Technical Immersion Trip
From Classroom to Industry: Experiencing Uganda's Energy Infrastructure and Professional Practice.
The IEEE Energy Industry Technical Immersion Trip is a flagship experiential learning activity organized by the IEEE Makerere University Student Branch in collaboration with IEEE Young Professionals.
Under the theme:
"From Classroom to Industry: Experiencing Uganda's Energy Infrastructure and Professional Practice,"
the activity seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical engineering education and real-world industrial practice by providing participants with firsthand exposure to Uganda's power generation infrastructure through a technical visit to the 183 MW Isimba Hydropower Plant.
The programme will feature technical presentations by practicing engineers, guided facility tours, interactive discussions, career conversations with IEEE Young Professionals, and networking opportunities aimed at enhancing participants' understanding of hydropower systems, plant operations, professional engineering practice, and career pathways within Uganda's energy sector.
The activity is expected to bring together approximately 70 participants, including engineering students, IEEE members, young professionals, and industry representatives, fostering professional networking, mentorship, and stronger student-to-young-professional transition pathways.
Participants will gain practical insights into:
• Hydropower generation systems and operations
• Plant control, protection, and grid integration
• Engineering career opportunities within the energy sector
• Professional competencies required in industry
• The role of IEEE in supporting lifelong professional development
