Title: Contributions of India to Power Electronics Research and Education - Perspectives of an Outsider-Observer
Abstract: India is the second or third contributor to published research in the various fields of the power electronics technology. After China, she competes with the United States for the second position. Without doubt she generates the second largest number of conference and journal papers every year. The Indian Institute of Technology departments of Electrical Engineering, especially the older ones, each has a
significant number of professors in the field second to China.
In terms of research content, Indian researchers are leaders, not only in the analytical arenas, but also in experimental research, which
strategically makes their research potentially industrially relevant and nationally impactful.
Despite these enviable achievements, the international dividends of the various Indian research and educational contributions to the field of
Power Electronics are not commensurate. Relative to the population and research paper publications generated, India produces relatively few
resident Indian IEEE Fellows every year, wins few paper awards.
India’s representation is sparse on the high editorial boards and various society boards. Their graduate students are not very active participants in the relevant IEEE societies.
This discussive presentation is essentially a perspective of an outsider-observer and an attempt to motivate professors and graduate students to get more involved in the international activities of the power electronics profession and community, and thus access the dividends already earned, but unclaimed by an agnostic posture towards international participation.
The balance of the talk will address emerging areas of research and education to properly situate the field of power electronics for greater
relevance in Indian national drive towards system electrification.
Speaker's Biography: Prof. Joseph Ojo Olorunfemi (Life Fellow, IEEE) is Chair Professor at the Center for Energy Systems Research (CESR),
Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville, Tennessee, USA. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, and his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA.
Prof. Olorunfemi began his academic career as a Lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, and has since established an internationally
recognized career in electrical engineering. He has held several visiting and honorary professorships across different continents and is
a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, U.K.), a Life Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science, and a
Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering. His research interests encompass electric machine analysis and drive control, power electronic converters, switching converter technology, converter-enabled power systems, distributed energy generation, and advanced control applications.
Prof. Olorunfemi has made outstanding contributions to the IEEE Power Electronics and Industry Applications communities through several
distinguished leadership roles. He served as Chair of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Industrial Power Converter Systems Department, was a Member of the IEEE IAS Board, and served as the Technical Program Chair of the 2023 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE 2023). He has also provided exceptional editorial leadership for leading IEEE journals. He served for more than two decades as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, later becoming the Deputy Editor-in-Chief during the establishment of the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (JESTPE). Subsequently, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE JESTPE and currently continues to serve the journal as an Editor. He has additionally served as an Associate Editor for the IET Journal of Power Electronics and the IET Journal of Electric Power Applications. Prof. Olorunfemi is internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to electric machines, motor drives, power electronics, and renewable energy systems, and continues to mentor researchers and
advance innovation in sustainable energy technologies worldwide.
