IEEE EMBS Professional Development Webinar


Student Branch Chapter (SBC31061F), Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, is organizing a Technical Webinar on the emerging role of Extended Reality (XR) technologies in transforming modern healthcare.

The webinar, titled "From Innovation to Implementation: Clinical XR (AR/VR) and the Evolving Role of Biomedical Engineers," will be delivered by Ms. Swathi Balaji, Lead Instruction Designer / Experience Designer at AutoVRse.

This session will explore how Clinical Extended Reality (XR), including Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), is being integrated into healthcare for medical education, clinical training, patient care, rehabilitation, and immersive learning. The webinar will also discuss the evolving role of biomedical engineers in designing, implementing, and advancing XR-based healthcare solutions, while addressing current industry trends, opportunities, and real-world applications.

The event aims to provide students, research scholars, faculty members, and young professionals with valuable insights into immersive healthcare technologies, interdisciplinary innovation, and the future of biomedical engineering in digital healthcare.

Ms. Swathi Balaji is the Lead Learning Experience Designer at AutoVRse, where she leads the design and development of immersive XR learning experiences across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and oil & gas. With an M.Tech in Advanced Manufacturing, she combines her engineering background with expertise in instructional design, cognitive science, and spatial UX to create realistic VR simulations for medical, safety, procedural, and operational training.

 

She has collaborated with global clients and leading healthcare organizations to transform complex medical workflows and high-risk environments into impactful VR learning experiences for laboratory chemists and medical professionals. Some of her work includes simulations focused on bio-lab hazards, carcinogens and their effects on human organs, drug interactions, and biosafety cabinet handling procedures.

 

Beyond her professional role, Swathi is an avid reader with a passion for literature and enjoys helping others discover their next fiction read. She is also enthusiastic about learning Japanese and aspires to achieve native-level proficiency in the language over the coming years.

 

Current Designation: Lead, Learning Experience Designer

Biography:

She designs XR experiences and simulations for environments where mistakes carry real consequences factory floors, surgical suites, chemical plants, and pharmaceutical labs.

What sets her work apart is the engineering foundation beneath it. With an M.Tech in advanced manufacturing and years spent studying how industrial systems fail, she builds scenarios that are technically accurate and operationally meaningful.

She understands the systems people are being trained on, which allows her to pinpoint where cognitive load peaks, where safety risks escalate, and how to craft experiences that build genuine muscle memory rather than surface-level familiarity.

At AutoVRse, she has led the design of safety and operational training simulations for global clients across industrial manufacturing, oil & gas, pharma, and medical imaging. She has visited client sites across India and abroad to study workflows, safety hazards, and human behavior under operational pressure and then translated those insights into immersive scenarios that hold up to real‑world scrutiny.

Her work sits at the intersection of three capabilities most XR designers possess only one of: deep engineering domain knowledge, learning science (instructional design, cognitive load theory, narrative‑based retention), and spatial UX for 3D environments.

She writes storyboards, designs interaction flows, scripts voiceovers, and directs the emotional arc of an experience. Her focus is on demonstrating that XR is not a novelty but the right tool for difficult problems particularly safety training, high‑stakes simulation, immersive onboarding, and complex procedural learning.

She is also a language learner (JLPT N3 – Japanese), driven by the belief that cultural fluency is essential for creating globally inclusive XR experiences.

Outside of work, she runs Notes of the Reader Girl, a book community on Instagram with more than 22,000 followers built over five years of encouraging people to pick up books they might otherwise overlook.
