IEEE Day - Missão Engenheirinhos
As part of the #ieeeday celebration, the IEEE Student Branch at IFF Campus Campos Centro organized the first official activity of Missão Engenheirinhos, a humanitarian outreach initiative created to bring science, technology, and engineering closer to children and teenagers in socially vulnerable contexts.
The activity was held at Casa de Acolhimento Pequenos Jornaleiros, a local shelter for teenagers in Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil. Rather than celebrating IEEE Day only within the university environment, the Student Branch sought to put the IEEE mission of “Advancing Technology for the Benefit of Humanity” into practice through direct community engagement.
IEEE volunteers introduced the participants to the IEEE, engineering, technology, and educational and professional opportunities in STEM. Special attention was given to discussing how technical and higher education can create new possibilities for their future.
The activity also included interactive STEM experiences. Participants interacted with Arduino-based robotics prototypes and explored how programming can produce physical actions in real systems. In another hands-on activity, the volunteers built and launched water rockets made from PET bottles together with the teenagers, introducing basic concepts of physics and aerodynamics in an accessible and engaging way.
The Student Branch also collected and delivered essential donations to the institution. Beyond the immediate activity, Missão Engenheirinhos was conceived as a long-term outreach initiative, with plans to return to the institution for practical technology workshops and expand STEM outreach to other vulnerable communities.
The IEEE Day celebration strengthened the connection between IEEE volunteers and the local community while demonstrating how engineering education, volunteering, and technology can be combined to generate meaningful social impact.
