THE LABORATORY FOR THE CONSERVATION, MANAGEMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF FOREST ECOSYSTEMS (LRCGAEF)
Algeria’s forests, covering more than 4 million hectares, constitute a natural heritage of exceptional ecological, economic, and social value. They provide essential ecosystem services, contribute to biodiversity conservation, support local livelihoods, and play a strategic role in climate regulation and environmental protection. However, this valuable heritage is increasingly exposed to multiple pressures, including anthropogenic disturbances and the growing impacts of climate change, which contribute to forest degradation and ecosystem vulnerability.
Among these threats, forest fires remain one of the major drivers of forest cover loss and ecosystem degradation. Their increasing frequency and intensity can result in significant environmental damage, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, carbon emissions, and reduced ecosystem resilience. These challenges highlight the urgent need for integrated approaches combining forest conservation, sustainable management, restoration, monitoring, and climate-change adaptation.
Given the current state and strategic importance of Algeria’s forest heritage, its conservation, management, and sustainable development constitute a national priority. This requires strengthening scientific knowledge, improving forest monitoring and assessment systems, promoting innovative technologies, and encouraging participatory approaches to forest management. Such an approach contributes to the implementation of national policies aimed at reconciling environmental conservation, sustainable development, and the rational use of forest resources within a modern and integrated national forest development framework.
In this context, the Laboratory for LRCGAEF, in collaboration with AAGRS and IEEE- GRSS Algeria Chapter, is organizing the 1st Seminar of the National Forestry Days.
