Abstract: The State of the Utility Industry & its Effect on Telecom

 

This presentation examines the seismic shift in the utility industry, moving from a historical era of relatively flat, predictable energy demand supplied from a small number of energy sources to the current state of demand growth driven by large-scale electrification including Data Centers, EV’s, Distributed Energy Resources, etc. This electrification is coincident with a shift from a few large energy production facilities to thousands of smaller production facilities and bi-directional power flows of massive quantity. This unprecedented densification of both supply and demand sides is forcing a profound change in the architecture and operation of the electric grid and the systems that support that operation.

This presentation will critically analyze the relationship between utility Operational Technology (OT) and modern telecommunications infrastructure detailing the immense new demands densification places on the telecom network. We will discuss the drivers, challenges, and opportunities presented by this convergence and the strategic shifts required to ensure grid reliability.
