Title: From Theory to Impact: The Journey of the Modern Electrical Engineer

This industry lecture will take students on a practical journey from the university classroom into the engineering profession, exploring how electrical engineering has evolved over the past decade and why it remains one of the most exciting and relevant career fields for the next generation.

The session will explore how advances in digitalisation, automation, renewable energy, intelligent control systems, power-system technologies and data-driven engineering are changing the way engineers design, operate and manage electrical systems. Students will gain perspective on how the electrical engineering profession is expanding beyond traditional technical disciplines and increasingly requires engineers who can combine technical expertise with technology, innovation, problem-solving, project management, and leadership.

A key focus will be the transition from engineering theory to practical industry application. Using real-world engineering experience, the lecture will demonstrate how university fundamentals form the foundation for solving complex engineering problems in industry. A practical case study will be drawn from the 10 MW Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) drive and synchronous motor upgrade project, which involved design, project leadership, OEM collaboration and commissioning.

The session will also explore the journey from graduate engineer to professionally registered engineer, including the importance of gaining meaningful engineering experience, developing engineering judgement, maintaining professional competence, and pursuing additional qualifications such as the Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) where applicable.

Beyond technical competence, students will be encouraged to consider the broader dimensions of an engineering career—leadership, communication, stakeholder management, project delivery, continuous learning and professional contribution. The role of voluntary professional associations such as the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) will be highlighted as platforms for networking, mentorship, leadership development and contributing to the growth of the engineering profession.

The lecture will conclude by challenging students to think beyond simply obtaining an engineering degree. The message will be that the degree opens the door, but practical experience, continuous learning, professional development, and a willingness to solve real-world problems are what shape an impactful engineer.

Biography:

Bongokuhle Nkwanyana is a professionally registered Electrical Engineer with over eight years of experience across the power and industrial engineering sectors. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) from the South African Department of Labour, and is professionally registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

He currently serves as a Senior Power Systems Engineer, specialising in steady-state and dynamic power system studies using PSS®E and DIgSILENT PowerFactory. His expertise includes load flow, short-circuit analysis, transient stability, small-signal stability, voltage stability and other power system studies supporting reliable system operation, planning and informed engineering decision-making.

Bongokuhle has developed broad technical experience across both power systems and industrial electrical engineering, including standby and essential power supplies, UPS systems up to 80 kVA, battery tripping units, ABB AC800 PLCs, and induction and synchronous motors ranging from 5 kW to 11 MW. He is experienced across major drive OEMs for applications below 250 kW and has specific expertise in Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and 10 MW Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) drive systems used to operate large synchronous motors for water-pumping applications.

A key highlight of his career was his leadership of a 10 MW synchronous motor and LCI drive control system upgrade, taking the project from design through commissioning while working closely with international OEM partners in the United Kingdom. This experience has strengthened his capabilities in engineering design, project leadership, stakeholder management, technical problem-solving and commissioning.

Beyond his technical career, Bongokuhle is passionate about professional development, engineering leadership and developing the next generation of engineers. He is a member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE), a SAIEE Council Member and serves as Deputy Chairperson of the SAIEE Central Gauteng Centre on a voluntary basis. He is also the recipient of the 2024 SAIEE Keith Plowden Young Achievers Award, recognising his contribution to the engineering profession.

Bongokuhle is the founding Chairperson of the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) Young Professionals Network (YPN), where he leads initiatives focused on professional development, mentorship, collaboration and industry engagement.

With a combination of technical depth, practical industry experience, project leadership and professional leadership, Bongokuhle is passionate about demonstrating how engineers can evolve from technical graduates into well-rounded professionals who use engineering, technology and leadership to create meaningful impact.
