Topic: Wireless Power Transfer for Electric Vehicle Applications

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is emerging as a key enabling technology for the next generation of electric vehicles, removing the need for cables and connectors and opening the way to automated static and dynamic (in-motion) charging. This invited lecture reviews the fundamentals and the state of the art of WPT for EV applications, including:

  • Principles of inductive and capacitive power transfer, and resonant coupling
  • Coil/pad geometries, compensation topologies and magnetic coupler design
  • Power electronic converter topologies and control strategies for high-efficiency WPT
  • Static, quasi-dynamic and dynamic (on-road) charging architectures
  • Misalignment tolerance, efficiency, EMI/EMC and safety considerations
  • Standards, current industrial practice, open research challenges and future trends

The lecture is aimed at researchers, engineers and postgraduate students working in power electronics, electric vehicles, energy conversion and related areas. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Wireless Power Transfer for Electric Vehicle Applications

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is emerging as a key enabling technology for the next generation of electric vehicles, eliminating cables and connectors and opening the way to automated static and dynamic (in-motion) charging. This invited lecture reviews the fundamentals and the state of the art of WPT for EV applications: inductive and capacitive power transfer and resonant coupling; magnetic coupler and compensation network design; power electronic converter topologies and control strategies for high-efficiency operation; static, quasi-dynamic and dynamic on-road charging architectures; misalignment tolerance, EMI/EMC and safety aspects; and relevant standards, industrial practice, open research challenges and future trends. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Biography:

Prof. Dr. Saad Mekhilef is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Science, Computing and Engineering Technologies at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia, and an IEEE Fellow. He previously served as Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Malaya, where he founded and led the Power Electronics and Renewable Energy Research Laboratory (PEARL).

His research interests include power electronics converters, control of power converters, renewable energy systems, energy efficiency and electric vehicles. He has authored and co-authored several hundred publications in international journals and conference proceedings, is among the most highly cited researchers in his field, and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. He has also supervised a large number of postgraduate students and led numerous industrial and research projects in power electronics and renewable energy.
