FET-100 Caribbean
In celebration of 100 years of the Field-Effect Transistor (FET), this event will bring together representatives from academia, government, and industry, both locally and internationally, to explore the future of semiconductor technology in the Caribbean.
The program will highlight the history and evolution of the transistor while looking at opportunities for semiconductor education, research, workforce development, industry collaboration, and investment within the region. Participants will hear from experts from the semiconductor industry and academia, gain insight into the technologies that have shaped modern electronics and engage in discussions on how the Caribbean can participate in the growing global semiconductor ecosystem.

Fernando Guarin of Semiconductor Industry
100th Anniversary of the Transistor with an Overview of the Semiconductor Industry Today and the Opportunities for Latin
Biography:
Dr. Fernando Guarín is an globally recognized authority in microelectronic and semiconductor reliability physics, having authored or co-authored over 140 scientific papers, five book chapters, and 12 to 15 U.S. patents that have amassed more than 3,200 citations. Spanning a distinguished 40-year career across National Semiconductor, IBM Microelectronics, and GlobalFoundries, his foundational bibliographic contributions focus on the reliability, degradation modeling, and qualification of advanced CMOS, Bipolar, Silicon Germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS, and 5G RF architectures. His most prominent works include pioneering research on negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) and channel hot carrier effects in PMOSFETs, seminal papers on the development of RF CMOS and SiGe technologies for terahertz-bound communication systems, and cutting-edge failure analysis methodologies like junction-level fault isolation using electron beam induced current (EBIC). Alongside his technical journals published through the IEEE Xplore Digital Library and the IBM Journal of Research and Development, Dr. Guarín’s bibliography features highly cited book chapters on hot carrier degradation as well as global industry perspective papers mapping out the historical and future trajectory of the transistor.

Durga Misra of New Jersey Institute of Technology
Engineering Energy Efficient Switching Devices for AI Hardware
Biography:
Dr. Durgamadhab (Durga) Misra is a Full Professor and Department Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). After earning his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1988, he established a highly distinguished career in solid-state electronics, including tenure as a visiting professor at the prestigious Bell Laboratories. His core research spans nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices, nanoscale CMOS gate stacks, and hardware designed for artificial intelligence. He is globally recognized for his pioneering 15-year study on the reliability of high-k gate dielectrics, creating insulative methods to block electron leakage in shrinking transistors that have since become industry standards.As a prolific researcher and educator, Dr. Misra has published over 250 technical articles in peer-reviewed journals and international conference proceedings. In addition to his primary papers, he has edited or co-edited more than 50 books and conference proceedings detailing micro- and nanoelectronic systems. He further serves the research community through high-profile editorial roles, previously acting as an Associate Editor for IEEE Circuits and Devices Magazine and an editorial board member for ECS Transactions. In recognition of his foundational contributions to semiconductor reliability and nanoelectronics, Dr. Misra was elected a Fellow of both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and The Electrochemical Society (ECS).

Arokia Nathan of Shandong University

Biography:
Professor Arokia Nathan is a pioneering electrical engineer, author, and academic whose prolific research has fundamentally advanced thin-film transistor (TFT) circuit technologies and flexible electronics. Spanning over three decades, his extensive bibliography includes more than 600 technical papers published in high-impact journals and flagship international conferences, as well as 6 authoritative textbooks and 13 book chapters. His major published works encompass foundational device science, modeling, and electronic design automation tools, notably co-authoring key texts such as Microtransducer CAD (with Henry Baltes), CCD Image Sensors in Deep-Ultraviolet: Degradation Behavior and Damage Mechanisms (with Flora M. Li), and contributing to the 75th Anniversary of the Transistor volume. Samar Saha of Semiconductor Industry
Invention of Field-Effect Device: How a Tiny Switch Sparked the Computing Revolution and Modern AI
Biography:
Dr. Samar K. Saha is an acclaimed American solid-state physicist, engineer, and educator who has made significant contributions to nanoscale semiconductor technology. After earning a Ph.D. in Solid-State Physics from Gauhati University and an M.S. in Engineering Management from Stanford University, he built a distinguished career spanning both Silicon Valley’s leading tech firms—including National Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, and Synopsys—and elite academic roles, currently serving as an Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at Santa Clara University. An internationally recognized leader in his field, he served as the Global President of the IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) from 2016 to 2017 and was elected an IEEE Life Fellow. His prolific body of work includes over 100 heavily cited research papers, 12 U.S. patents in semiconductor manufacturing, and two influential textbooks: Compact Models for Integrated Circuit Design (2015) and FinFET Devices for VLSI Circuits and Systems (2020).

Victor Grimblatt of Synopsys Chile
Synopsys and its Role in the Development of Design Centers in Latin America
Biography:
Dr. Victor Grimblatt is a distinguished Chilean electronic engineer and a global leader in microelectronics R&D, currently serving as the Executive Director and General Manager of Synopsys Chile. He holds an Electronic Engineering degree from the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María and a Microelectronics Diploma from the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, France. Since 2006, Grimblatt has spearheaded advanced Electronic Design Automation (EDA) development in Latin America, while simultaneously advocating for sustainable technology and IoT applications in smart agriculture. His extensive leadership within the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS)—including serving on its Board of Governors—and his tenure as President of the Association of Chilean Electronic and Electrical Industry (AIE) have earned him numerous accolades, including the 2023 IEEE Region 9 Outstanding Engineer Award and the 2024 IEEE CASS Meritorious Service Award.

Dr. M. Jamal Deen is an internationally acclaimed Indo-Guyanese/Canadian engineering professor and applied physicist widely recognized as a foremost global authority on microelectronics, nanoelectronics, and optoelectronics. A Distinguished University Professor and Director of the Micro- and Nano-Systems Laboratory at McMaster University, Dr. Deen has compiled a massive bibliographical footprint consisting of over 600 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers, alongside multiple patents and foundational monographs. His seminal textbooks, Silicon Photonics: Fundamentals and Devices and Fiber Optic Communications: Fundamentals and Applications, serve as definitive academic guides for modern optical communications data transmission. Over a decorated career spanning multiple decades, his research has advanced through three major epochs: foundational physical modeling of nanoscale semiconductor transistor noise, the development of high-sensitivity electrochemical biosensors, and his current pioneering work in designing ubiquitous healthcare frameworks and smart medical home architectures to support independent living for aging populations. Reflecting his profound impact on the scientific literature, he has been appointed to the Order of Canada, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and holds the distinct honor of being the second Canadian elected to the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences.
