The rapid deployment of AI-optimized data centers is introducing electrical load behaviors that differ significantly 
from traditional IT facilities. AI workloads exhibit high power density, fast transient demand, and large step changes 
in active power associated with training and inference cycles, creating new challenges for power system stability and 
protection. In parallel, the growing adoption of direct current (DC) architectures within data centers is reshaping how 
these loads are distributed, controlled, and interfaced to the grid. 
 
Joel discusses AI load characteristics and examines DC-centric data center architectures as an enabler for improved 
load management. A layered mitigation approach is presented, spanning DC rack-level buffering and coordinated 
power control, facility-level UPS and/or medium-voltage solid-state transformer (MVSST) for ramp-rate control, and 
grid interface functions. Grid code compliance topics including load shedding, voltage and frequency ride-through, 
and controlled post-fault active power recovery are addressed. The results show that coordinated DC architectures 
and power-electronic controls can allow AI data centers to scale while maintaining grid-friendly behavior and 
regulatory compliance.

Biography:

Joel Liu, PhD., P.E. is the Direct Current Data Center Architect at Eaton's Global Data Center Segment, where he 
focuses on next-generation power architectures for AI and high-density data centers. His previous experience 
includes engineering leadership and technical positions at Eaton, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, and Thales, where 
he led power system consulting business and developed advanced power systems. He received his Ph.D. in 
Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University and has published numerous technical papers and book 
chapters in power systems and power quality. Dr. Liu is an IEEE Senior Member and a licensed Professional 
Engineer in five U.S. states.
