IEEE Seminar on “Future energy system with focus on grids in distribution and wind power” by Vattenfall
Welcome to IEEE Seminar on “Future energy system with focus on grids in distribution and wind power”
by Fredrik Carlsson, R&D portfolio manager, Distribution, Vattenfall, and Catalina Buitrago, R&D Power Systems Engineer, Vattenfall
Abstract:
The electric energy system is transforming and expanding. Solar and wind power dominates the new production and data centres, chargers for electric transportation, energy storages and hydrogen production for material production are the new electric customers . The future grid needs will be based on the old system but expanded, with digital and smarter functionality. These new parts of the grid, we will go into and show how we do R&D in these areas.
As we look toward the future, offshore wind is becoming a key pillar in building resilient, renewable power grids. Large-scale offshore wind farms have the potential to make a significant impact on the future development of power systems. However, the realization of this potential depends not only on technological advancements but also on the development of analysis tools that help us to better understand, design, and optimize these complex power systems. In this presentation, we will show you how in Vattenfall R&D we develop different power system analysis tools that can cope with the level of complexity and uncertainty in early-stage of offshore wind projects development.
Bios of Speakers
Fredrik Carlsson was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on January 17, 1974. He wrote his master thesis in 1998 in the field of "models of electric actuators for railway vehicles", which was entitled the best master thesis in railway techniques by Swedtrain. He received his M.Sc. degree 1999 in Electrical Engineering from KTH, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. He got his Ph.D. degree in January 2004 with the title "On impacts and ride-through of voltage sags exposing line-operated AC-machines". He has then worked as a researcher at the department of Electrical engineering, KTH, Stockholm, Sweden. Research was done in the fields of diagnostics, traction applications, and hybrid vehicles. At 2008, he started working as a senior R&D engineer at Vattenfall Research & Development with smart grids, power quality, wind power, asset management, transformer monitoring and electricity market. Since 2015 until present he is heading the R&D portfolio for Distribution.
Catalina Buitrago was born in Bogotá, Colombia, on September 27, 1995. She has a B.Sc. in Electronic Engineering in 2017 and a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 2018, both from the University of Los Andes, Colombia. After graduation, she worked as an Electrical Engineer Associate, focusing on protective device coordination and arc-flash studies for the design of Oil and Gas facilities. In 2020, she was awarded an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship to pursue an M.Sc. in Decentralised Smart Energy Systems at Université de Lorraine in Nancy, France, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Since 2022, she has been working as an R&D Power Systems Engineer at Vattenfall in Stockholm, Sweden. Catalina is currently Product Owner of the Offshore Power Technology team in R&D, leading the development of electrical engineering solutions for offshore wind farms. She has also been involved in the development of standardized tools for power system studies, protection system analysis, offshore substation design optimization, and the advancement of efficient and reliable electrical infrastructure for Vattenfall's offshore wind farms.
