Pipelines and the Bigger Issues No One Talks About
This is a joint meeting of Canadian Society of Senior Engineers and IEEE Life Members Affinity Groups.
This series of presentations has been occurring for more than 20 years and is now being also advertised to the IEEE Northern Canada Section (NCS) Life Members Affinity Group (LMAG) through vTools and other IEEE LMAG's and IEEE members depending upon the topic. At the same time the Canadian Society of Senior Engineers (CSSE) is using their national organization to provide information, the subject and speaker to members across Canada.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026. The meeting will open at 12:30 pm MDT (2:30pm Eastern), with the presentation starting at 12:45 (2:45 pm EDT).

The vagaries of U.S. Policy in recent years as well as the rapid development of shale oil and gas resources in the U.S. in the last two decades has resulted in major national discussions about the security of pipeline systems and the need for alternate routes to new and even existing oil markets. In the past oil and gas development and construction of associated North American pipelines were collaboratively developed without major consideration to policy differences between the U.S. and Canada. Systems were built logically and in a way that minimized costs, met market demands, protected the environment, and recognized that Western Canada would be a long-term supplier to the U.S. the largest consumer of both oil and natural gas in the world. Paradigm shifts in technology, conflicting goals for future energy supplies, and policies regarding energy security have radically changed views on pipelines, and more changes may shape the future of oil and gas development in Alberta and Canada in the next 1-2 decades.
This presentation will take a high-level look at major changes in energy outlook that have taken place in Canada and Globally in the last 10-20 years, and even in the last year, and how these changes may impact and future pipeline and other oil and gas projects in Canada.
Bio: Bruce Peachey, BScChE (U of S ‘76), P.Eng. has over 50 years of experience in the Canadian oil and gas industry. He spent 16 years with Imperial Oil, in conventional oil and gas and oil sands operations, was a founding director of the Petroleum Technology Alliance of Canada (PTAC) in 1996 and is currently the Secretary-Treasurer of the CSSE. Since working on oil gathering lines as a summer student in Devon in 1974, Bruce has been involved in many projects looking at oil and gas pipelines including one of, if not the, first Canadian “dilbit” pipeline used to carry bitumen from Cold Lake to the Strathcona Refinery and a parallel line back to Cold Lake in 1981.
