The Trident Chapter to host MTT-S Young Professional Lecturer Vishal Balasubramanian from Intel Canada. Dr. Balasubramanian will give a seminar,  "From Labs to Startups: Unlocking the Business Potential of Microwave Technology" at 12:30 pm ET on Wednesday, September 23.

The seminar will be in-person in room IOE 1680 on the University of Michigan North Campus in Ann Arbor, MI.

Despite the lucrative opportunities in microwave and electromagnetics, many researchers and engineers shy away from pursuing entrepreneurial ventures in this field due to perceived complexity, lack of market awareness, and challenges in bridging technical innovation with business strategies. This talk is designed for Young Professionals, early-career engineers, and graduate students who are exploring career paths beyond academia and are interested in understanding how to translate technical expertise into viable startups.

The talk will explore the entrepreneurial potential of microwave and electromagnetics, focusing on transforming lab research into scalable products. It will discuss the journey from identifying industry pain points to developing proof-of-concept prototypes, navigating funding opportunities, building a business model, and commercializing ideas for industrial or consumer markets. Real-world examples and success stories will provide actionable insights.

Attendees will learn how to identify startup opportunities in microwave technology, understand the critical steps to bridge academic research with industry demands, and gain practical insights into overcoming challenges in funding and commercialization. The talk will inspire attendees to view microwave technology not just as a research domain but as a platform for impactful innovation and entrepreneurship.

Biography:

Vishal Balasubramanian (PhD) earned his B.Eng. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Anna University in 2020 and completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Kelowna, Canada) in 2025. His research focuses on metamaterials microwave-based sensing and their integration with modern technologies like AI, and AR. He currently works as a SoC Design Verification Engineer at Intel Canada. Previously, he served as a Sessional Lecturer at UBC, teaching computer engineering courses, and contributed as an Approval Committee Member for the UBC Student Initiative Fund. Vishal’s industry experience includes leading digital healthcare and mixed reality projects at Capgemini and consulting at Cossian Design Studio. His awards include the IEEE MTT-S Graduate Fellowship, UBC Dean’s Thesis Fellowship, and recognitions from TI, CMC, IEEE, and Yunus Centre.
