Renewable auction and pan-EU optimization models in the European power system - Dr. David Pozo

The European power system is being reshaped by a rapid build-out of wind and solar, and by the market and support mechanisms that steer where and when that capacity arrives. Renewable auctions determine much of the investment, while the wholesale market and network determine what the system can actually absorb, and the two are designed largely in isolation. This seminar looks at how large-scale optimization models of the pan-European power system can bridge that gap. It covers the modelling tools used to represent European markets and networks, how auction design can be evaluated within them, and what such models reveal about system costs, congestion, and the distribution of effects across Member States. The talk closes with reflections on the practical limits of continental-scale modelling and on the role of open models and data in supporting EU energy policy.

Dr. David Pozo

Biography:

David Pozo is currently a Scientific Officer specializing in Energy Security and Markets at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in the Netherlands. From 2017 to 2022, David served as an Assistant Professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech). Before joining Skoltech, David held Postdoctoral Fellow positions at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.

David's research interests encompass power and energy systems, operations research, uncertainty, game theory, electricity markets, and optimization and flexibility challenges in modern power systems. The primary motivation behind his research activities is to bridge the gap between science and policy design, while addressing the complexities and challenges presented by future sustainable energy systems.
