Current surveillance and tracking radars employ monopulse processing for target detection and angle estimation. With an additional delta-delta beam, advanced capabilities such as mainlobe cancellation (MLC), two-target resolution, and a secondary set of monopulse measurement can be added to the system. In this lecture, the following features are reviewed and discussed:

1)       Radar system evolution from phased array to hybrid beamforming to digital beamforming.

2)       Separable beamforming with product beam and orthogonal nulling-beamforming and beamforming with distributed apertures.

3)       Monopulse maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) complementary to monopulse scheme.

4)       Total Least Squares (TLS) v.s. Least Squares (LS) for multi-pulse processing.

5)       Monopulse beams v.s. cluster beams.

6)       Monopulse multiple signal classification (MUSIC) and beam-based MUSIC.
