Magazine-style review and tutorial articles offer a powerful medium for communicating research visions to a broad and interdisciplinary audience. In this talk, I reflect on my experience writing magazine-style reviews and how this form of writing shaped my research narrative, collaborations, and group strategy. Writing for generalists pushed me to think beyond narrow technical problems, articulate long-term research directions, and frame my work within broader technological and societal contexts. This process helped crystallise strategic research themes within my group and guided the development of new research directions. Moreover, making research accessible to non-specialists fostered interdisciplinary collaborations and industry engagement, expanding the reach and relevance of my work. I will share practical lessons on how magazine-style reviews can amplify research impact, position researchers as thought leaders, and shape community discourse. The talk concludes with actionable insights for early-career researchers on leveraging magazine-style writing to communicate vision, build collaborations, and influence research agendas.
