IEEE AP-S TC1 and MGA Seminar
Computational Sensing: Digital Arrays and Beamforming

Presented by Dr. Randy Haupt, Haupt Associates, Boulder, CO

Abstract: Digital beamforming provides a system-level framework for turning antenna arrays into computational sensors that estimate signal direction, form beams, and suppress interference. The seminar introduces per-element digitization, covariance matrix formation, and eigenstructure analysis, supporting DOA algorithms such as MUSIC and ESPRIT and adaptive beamforming methods including MVDR, LMS, and RLS. Simulation and hardware demonstrations examine calibration, phase coherence, converter performance, and covariance estimation in practical digital array systems.
