The lecture will introduce MIMO wireless systems, using multiple
antenna arrays at both transmitter and receiver, and their
benefits: a very significant increase in spectral efficiency, and also
in link reliability. It will demonstrate how the capacity of a MIMO
channel can be calculated, and discuss the concepts of
multiplexing gain and diversity gain. It will then consider the
modelling of the MIMO channel in realistic scenarios, especially
showing how correlation arises between the antennas, and the
effect this may have on the capacity of practical MIMO systems.
