Growing concern of emissions and global warming over the health problems
of the mother earth and the habitants have forced the reduction in the
utilisation conventional energy sources of green energy sources for the
purpose of transportation. This makes the necessity of the utilisation of
electric energy for the transportation. Electric Drive System for electric
vehicle propulsion can be divided into two parts; termed as supply system
and traction system. Traction motor and voltage source inverter are
considered as a part of traction system. Supply system consists of battery
and or combination of battery with other types dc-sources of higher energy
or power densities, like fuel cells PV modules, ultra capacitors etc.
Permanent magnet brushless (PM BL) motors of trapezoidal back-emf type are
considered as one of the best option for light electric vehicles and are
termed as PM BLDC motor. Present lecture consider short discussions on the
PM BLDC motor drive for the propulsion of light electric vehicle.
Discussion includes classification, principal of operation, and current
control strategies of PM BLDC motors together with the discussion on the
problem of torque ripple.
