IEEE Virtual Scavenger Hunt
IEEE YP South Saskatchewan would like to invite you to a free virtual scavenger hunt event. (Registration required)
What are we trying to do?
A Scavenger Hunt is a game in which players have to run around in search of a particular article. This game can be played in teams or solo, and the larger the area you play it in, the more fun it gets.
The aim of the game is to gather as many points as possible by finding the object before the rest of the players. A virtual scavenger hunt does the same thing, only we are able to use webcams and the power of the internet to play from the safety of our homes!
Because of the virtual nature of this game, in addition to retrieving the article and bringing it to their webcam, a player would also need to hit a virtual 'buzzer' (just like on the game show 'Jeapordy!') to help the host keep track of who was fastest each round.
Rules for the Virtual Scavenger Hunt
- If you are using two (2) devices to play, the webcam device and the ‘buzzer’ device should be located close to one another (i.e., within 15 ft) Players are not allowed to bring their webcam or buzzer devices with them on their search: they must bring the scavenger item to their webcam and *then* buzz in.
- All players (or runners) must be visible in their webcam before each round begins. The host calls out the first Hunt item on the list and starts the preset countdown (90 seconds).
- The players must rush to find the Hunt item in their house and bring it to their webcam before the timer runs out. Once they arrive, they must 'buzz in' to record that they are back and have the item.
- Once the round countdown ends, all players must come back to the starting position, whether they found the Hunt item or not.
- After at least three people have buzzed in or the round timer has run out, the first three (3) entrants will verify with the host via the webcam that they have the Hunt item for that round. The host then records the points won by each player.
Additional rules:
- For any Hunt items identified by colour, at least 50% of the scavenged item must be of the designated colour (i.e. a 'red jacket' must be at least half red to qualify)
- For any Hunt item, a photo or physical model of the item also counts so long as it is in printed or physical form, not electronic (i.e. a painting or paper photo of a banana would be accepted in lieu of a real banana, as would a plastic or toy banana, but not a photo of one on your phone)
If using 'runners' (kids are awesome!), then the runners need to follow the same presence rules: visible on the webcam before the item is called, and the buzzer can't be pressed until the runner is close enough to 'tag' the person managing the buzzer device after they return (so no calling ahead to buzz in early)
Point Scoring
Since the idea of the game is to see who can locate and bring items the fastest, the point system is based on who reaches their webcam and buzzes in first.
- The first player to reach their screen and buzz in with the correct item wins 5 points.
- The second player to buzz in with the correct item wins 3 points. The third player wins 1 points.
- The players who find the item within the 90 seconds but did not arrive first, second or third, receive 0 point. Please make sure the Host can see your item in the webcam for the thumbs up!
- The rest of the players (who did not find the item, or found the item after the time was up) receive 0 points.
At the end of the game, the host adds up each player’s total, and the player with the highest score wins! There will be 3 gift card prizes for $25, $20 and $15 for top 3 players/teams.
Note: The Host is Judge, Jury and Executioner for all point awards. Any disputes will be decided by the Host, and the Host’s decision is final. While bribes are welcome and will be accepted, they will have no impact on the Hosts’ final decisions. You have been warned...
