Private Tour of Fermi National Accelerator Lab - Fermilab, Batavia, IL
About our Private Tour:
This private tour is Saturday, April 26 at the Fermilab facility in Batavia, IL.
We will visit the Lederman Science Center
at noon before our private tour.
The private tour is 2 hours long starting at 1:30 pm.
The tour begins in Wilson Hall where we will view the Laboratory from
the 15th floor windows and visit various displays located there.
The tour moves to the Linear Accelerator building where we will see the
Cockcroft-Walton, the components in the linear accelerator gallery and
the Main Control Room.
Note: Minimum age for the tour is 10 years old.
About Fermilab:
Fermilab builds and operates the accelerators, detectors and other facilities
that physicists need to carry out forefront research in high-energy physics.
Fermilab is the largest high-energy physics laboratory in the United States,
and is second in the world only to CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics.
Fermilab's Tevatron was the world's second-highest-energy particle accelerator
and collider. In the Tevatron, counter-rotating beams of protons and
antiprotons produced collisions allowing scientists to examine the most basic
building blocks of matter, and the forces acting on them.
Particle physics research has grown into an international effort, with
experiment collaborations numbering in the hundreds.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is now producing collisions at seven
times the energy of the Tevatron. More than 1,200 U.S. scientists are involved
in the LHC and its experiments.
Fermilab is now embarking on new subatomic neutrino research.
Click this Fermilab YouTube video for an introduction into Fermilab's
newest exciting science project, or visit the Fermilab Official Website.
We will be joined on this tour by members of the Cedar Rapids and Chicago Sections.
Our trip details and logistics from Des Moines, IA:
This is a day long Saturday trip requiring driving to and from the facility. We are allowing 5 1/2 hours one way for the trip from Des Moines.
Google Maps shows just over 4 1/2 hours without stopping from Des Moines.
If we allow two stops en-route, one of 15 minutes for fuel, bathrooms, etc.
and one of 45 minutes for lunch, fuel, bathrooms etc. that would mean we need
to leave Des Moines at 6:30 AM to get us there by noon.
The drive home start time is flexible allowing arrival back to Des Moines
no later than 10:30 PM that evening.
We plan to drive on I-80 east, cross the Mississippi River
then join Illinois toll road I-88 to our destination.
This will require 3 brief stops to pay tolls totaling $8.70 cash.
The individual toll stops are the Dixson plaza toll of $3.60 cash,
the Dekalb plaza toll of $3.60 cash and the Aurora plaza toll of $1.50 cash.
If you are interested in the tollway details you may go to the
Illinois Tollway rates and tolls page.
Each vehicle will be responsible for it's own tolls.
Some participants may want to stay overnight on Saturday and some may want
to return home Saturday evening.
