IEEE Fire Protection Life Safety Mini Conference
How does a fire sprinkler system work? Do I need equal pressure at all my heads? How to calculate the minimum pressure? Find out today!
Join us for a session on the latest fire protection codes and standards. Find out what professionals are doing in the industry. Sit back and relax as we explore the state of the art monitoring system, sprinkler systems, and the special hazardous suppression system. Find out how the Code changed with the Fire Alarm and Voice Evacuation system and the IES updates to their exit and emergency lighting. NFPA 13 has updates to the sprinkler riser and hose systems and fire pumps. Find out what changed with the back flow preventors, fire extinguishers and kitchen hood fire suppression systems. Can we save you a seat?

Fire Alarm
Fire protection and fire alarm industries are constantly changing based on new technologies. Advancements aim to improve the effectiveness, flexibility and integration of fire alarm systems with other building safety features. Being able to identify and understand new technologies is critical to successfully implementing fire alarm and detection solutions. This presentation will focus on six new fire alarm technologies that are currently available on the market. We will discuss new technology associated with notification appliances, detectors and fire sprinkler monitoring. At the end of the presentation attendees will understand what these most recent fire alarm technologies are and the advantages that they provide.
Biography:
Matthew has nearly three decades of fire protection industry experience that includes design, installation, testing and commissioning of fire alarm and mass notification systems as a contractor, manufacturer, and consultant. He has a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree with a specialization in Construction Management from Penn State University. He is certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) as a Level IV Senior Engineering Technologist (SET) in Fire Alarm Systems. Matthew is also a Member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and a Principal Member of the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code NFPA 72 Technical Committee on Initiating Devices for Fire Alarm Signaling Systems, as well as a Member of Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA) and an active AFAA training committee member. Along with his numerous memberships, he has presented at multiple conferences and conventions including the 2008 NFPA World Safety Conference in Las Vegas, NV and the 2023 AFAA Annual Fire Expo in Phoenix, AZ. Matthew is also an accomplished published author with his article for Consulting-Specifying Engineer in April 2023. Currently he is a Mid-Atlantic Operations Leader with Jensen Hughes based in Baltimore, MD. He is a Life Member and past Fire Chief of the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company located in Manassas, VA. and an Alumni Member of the Alpha Fire Company of State College, PA.

Life Safety Design
This presentation addresses changes in the International Fire Code and NFPA 72 for the installation of smoke alarms or smoke detectors within R-1 and R-2 occupancies where the requirements for 520hz (low frequency) notification appliances are required. We will discuss two options in how to achieve this requirement and the pros and cons of each.
Biography:
Mr. Kapis is a Senior Consultant for the Bay Area office of Coffman Engineers, Inc. His experience spans 44 years in the Fire Protection industry. Mr. Kapis has been responsible for the design and implementation of numerous fire alarm, smoke control, and life safety systems for projects throughout the continental United States and abroad. His experience has included the development of fire alarm and life safety system curriculums, and the development of regional training centers for the advancement of technical and engineering skills in the fire alarm industry. Mr. Kapis is involved in product litigation support as a subject matter expert. He is an acting Board Member for the California Automatic Fire Alarm Association (CAFAA), a member of NFPA and a Technical Committee Member on Fundamentals of Fire Alarm and Signaling Systems.
