Title: Advanced Materials Science Characterization: A Lego Story

Dr. Matthew Olszta has been performing and developing advanced electron microscopy characterization for over two and a half decades, the majority of which he has spent at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.  His work has touched a wide variety of materials and research projects from solid oxide fuel cells to structural materials failure analysis for the nuclear industry.  During the past decade, he and his fellow teammates have pushed the boundaries of next generation microscopy, developing a cutting edge automation platform called AutoEM.

As you will see in the following presentation, while Dr. Olszta has never taught in an academic setting, he strives to make his research understandable to a broad audience.  Science should be approachable if we are to reinvigorate our need to develop future scientific and technical workforce.  His presentation will give insight into how we can go from using Legos as a teaching tool to peering into the atomic soul of the material's world.

Please indicate if you/guests are coming in person so we can order enough pizza - please bring your own beverage. Pizza will arrive at 5:30, presentation will begin at 6:00 pm
