Building an Undergraduate CubeSat Program From the Ground Up
As Colorado State University moves towards a more robust aerospace program, the demand for established undergraduate projects in the field grows. The reduced cost, scope, and time to launch Cube Satellite programs is an attractive prospect for students to gain valuable experience with space systems, the complete engineering life cycle, and program management. From a high-altitude ballooning campaign, dual-use antenna positioner, and ground station, to international, institutional, and industry collaboration, the Open Orbit CubeSat Team is paving the way for all students, of any experience, to hit the ground running in this fast-paced and challenging industry. However, new programs built by and for undergraduate students possess a number of unique challenges. Join us as we discuss our experiences with and approaches to student turnover, engagement, knowledge transfer, open source, and more as our team approaches its second semester.
