Problemas Críticos del Consumo Energético en Sistemas Digitales Avanzados: Pasado, Presente y Futuro

Power consumption in modern circuits designed for high-performance and artificial intelligence applications is becoming one of the most critical limiting factors for their present and future deployment. This talk will review the major technological milestones that have shaped computing as we know it today, and the disruptive changes required in advanced digital circuit design, along with the resulting complexity and architectural characteristics. We will analyze the current landscape and how the intensive adoption of these technologies is pushing computing toward a scenario of near unsustainability in terms of energy and environmental impact. The talk will also explore anticipated short-term advances in AI hardware, including mixed analog-digital computing cores, neuromorphic circuits, and reversible computing, as well as the thermodynamic limits of computation. We will discuss emerging architectures, the role of heterogeneous integration, and the shift toward new computing paradigms. |

Antonio Rubio, Catedrático Emérito de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña
Problemas Críticos del Consumo Energético en Sistemas Digitales Avanzados: Pasado, Presente y Futuro / Power consumption in advanced digital systems, the critical problem: past, present and future
Antonio Rubio (Life Senior Member, IEEE) received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the School of Industrial Engineering, Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain. He has served as Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at UPC and Full Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of the Balearic Islands, Palma, Spain. He later held a Full Professorship in Electronic Technology at the School of Telecommunications Engineering, UPC, and is currently Emeritus Professor at UPC. His research interests include VLSI design and test, device and circuit modeling, high-speed circuit design, and emerging nanodevices and nanoarchitectures. He has served as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Computers, Senior Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology, and Chair of the IEEE Nano-Giga Technical Committee (2018–2022). He was also the IEEE Computer Society Integrity Chair (2019–2021). Additionally, he serves as Chair of the PERTE CHIP program at UPC.
