RELISILIENCY: An Enterprise-wide Approach to Reliability and Resiliency of Electric Energy Systems

Infrastructure systems reliability and resiliency, while sharing common concerns, however, they are considered as distinct paradigms, addressing "Low-Impact, High-Probability (LIHP)" and "High-Impact, Low-Probability (HILP)" events, respectively. In energy systems, they have historically necessitated divergent methodologies and objective functions, despite utilizing similar tools, such as "Remote Control Switches (RCSs)" and "Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)". This talk introduces RELISILITY, a concept coined by Alireza Fereidunian to synthesize these objectives into a unified, enterprise-wide planning framework. Subsequently, several realizations of Resiliency concept in energy systems are presented and discussed, which can be generalized to the smart city infrastructure systems. The empirical findings demonstrate that this unified approach not only ensures regulatory compliance, but also enhances community safety and sustainability by providing a reliability backbone reinforced with resiliency features. The talk provides decision-makers with techno-economic insights into achieving resource synergy and system robustness.

Alireza of K. N. Toosi University of Technology

Biography:

Alireza Fereidunian is an Associate Professor at the K. N. Toosi University of Technology (KNTU), Tehran, Iran. He has been serving as an independent consultant and trainer/educator in energy distribution and urban infrastructures sectors on modernization, operation, maintenance and automation projects and initiatives, as well as working as a research scientist/fellow at Imperial College London, Aalto University (Helsinki U of Tech) and University of Tehran.
His research interests include smart environments (City/Home/eGrid,
/eMobility), energy data analytics, harvesting and transition, high-reliability distribution systems as distribution automation and asset management. Moreover, he is interested in and enthusiastically working on subjects in reliability theory, systems theory and engineering, complexity theory, uncertainty theory, and human-automation interactions (adaptive autonomy), where he has developed essential ideas on adaptive autonomy expert system (AAES) and self-healing by healer reinforcement.
Dr Fereidunian is a Senior Member of IEEE (PES), and is (/has been) serving as the Chair of ISOSG (Iranian Society of Smart Grid), IEEE Iran Section Board Observer, former IEEE Iran Section YP (Young Professionals) Committee Chair, former IEEE Iran Section MD (Membership Development) Committee Chair, and a former INCOSE Iran Founding Point of Contact.
Alireza has received his PhD and MSc from University of Tehran, in 2009 and 1997, and his BS from IUST in 1994.
