Interdependence of the Critical Infrastructures and Their Protection
A Technical Session by Prof. Luis G. Kun, IEEE Life Fellow
The Department of CS&IT, KLH Bachupally Campus, in association with the IEEE Hyderabad Section and KLH IEEE Student Branch, successfully organized a technical session titled “Interdependence of Critical Infrastructures and Their Protection” on 19 August 2026 at the KLH Auditorium.
The session was conducted from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM and featured Prof. Luis G. Kun, IEEE Life Fellow, as the distinguished speaker. The event brought together students, faculty members, and IEEE members to gain valuable insights into the growing importance of protecting critical infrastructure in an increasingly interconnected technological environment.
The session focused on the interdependence between different critical infrastructure systems and the challenges associated with protecting them from emerging threats. Prof. Luis G. Kun explained how sectors such as energy, communication, transportation, healthcare, information technology, and other essential services are interconnected and how a disruption in one system can potentially affect multiple other systems.
He also highlighted the importance of cybersecurity, resilience, risk management, preparedness, and coordinated protection mechanisms in maintaining the continuity and reliability of critical infrastructure. The discussion helped participants understand how technological advancements create new opportunities while also introducing new security challenges.
The interaction with the speaker provided students with an opportunity to learn from an internationally recognized expert and gain a broader perspective on real-world infrastructure protection. The session encouraged participants to think about the role of engineers and technology professionals in designing secure, reliable, and resilient systems.
The event was conducted in collaboration with various IEEE societies, including IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society (SMC), and IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE), promoting interdisciplinary learning and collaboration among students.
The session also encouraged active participation and interaction among the attendees. Students gained awareness of the importance of understanding infrastructure interdependencies and adopting a comprehensive approach toward security and resilience rather than addressing individual systems in isolation.
The event concluded with a positive response from the participants. The session served as a valuable learning experience and provided students with meaningful exposure to the challenges involved in protecting critical infrastructure. It also reinforced the importance of continuous learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and responsible application of technology in addressing complex real-world security challenges.

Interdependence of the Critical Infrastructures and Their Protection
Prof. Luis G. Kun will address the interdependence of critical infrastructure systems and the importance of protecting these interconnected systems from disruptions and emerging threats. The session will provide insights into infrastructure resilience, security, technology, and the multidisciplinary approaches required to safeguard essential services. Prof. Kun has held leadership and distinguished lecturer roles within IEEE and was elevated to IEEE Life Fellow in 2016.
