IEEE Southeastern Michigan: Chapter VIII (EMC)

Pizza Sponsor: Cornucopia Technical Sales

Venue Sponsor: Apex Test Labs

Speaker:  Scott Faust

Abstract:
There is a need to hand down wisdom and information from one generation to the next. This is especially important in Electromagnetic Compatibility. Mentors answer questions that book learning may not divulge. Questions such as where to put a capacitor, when to use a ferrite, how to ground,  are all questions that experience can help answer. In his presentation Dr. Scott Faust will encourage the EMC community to develop those mentoring relationships.

Bio:
Dr. Faust leads the Vehicle Electronics and Architecture EMC Laboratory, performing MIL-STD-461 testing of electrical and
electronic subsystems used in Military ground vehicles, and supporting design/development efforts for EMC. He supports the
U.S. Army Ground Vehicle System Center (GVSC) and the wider TACOM community in EMI/EMC and E3-related requirements
development, technical reviews, failure analysis, and mitigation of EMI/EMC issues. As the Chair of the TACOM E3 Requirements
Board, Dr. Faust represents GVSC and TACOM to the wider DoW E3 community and supports the education of the Detroit Arsenal
workforce in E3-related subjects. Dr. Faust mentors engineers in the GVSC workforce in EMI/E3-related subjects, and teaches
graduate-level courses in Antennas, Electromagnetic Compatibility, and Electromagnetic Engineering.

Prior to joining GVSC, Dr. Faust held a variety of test, design, and engineering/technical leadership positions with various Tier I automotive suppliers. He has performed EMC testing on a variety of electronic modules, from motorcycle engine controllers to safety electronics
including airbags and ABS/vehicle stability control systems.  Dr. Faust is a Certified EMC Engineer through the International Association for Radio,
Telecommunications, and Electromagnetics. He is a past recipient of the DoD Army E3 Award (2020) and the Army Civilian Service Commendation Medal. In addition to his work at GVSC, Dr. Faust is a Part-Time Lecturer at Oakland University, and an Adjunct Professor at University of Detroit Mercy. He received his BSEE from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (1990), and M.S. (1994) and Ph.D. (2018) degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Oakland University.
