Preventing Static Ignitions in Production Operations

Static ignitions occur periodically in solvent handling and petroleum production areas. The resulting explosions and fires can be devastating. After a brief introduction to the IEEE Power & Energy Society (IEEE-PES) and to the Industry Applications Society (IEEE-IAS), I will review the requirements for an ignition, and show a video of a static ignition in a production operation. This ignition caused multiple explosions and a fire that injured more than 125 people. One employee tragically died. I will discuss the elements that contributed to this incident and review of static control requirements needed to prevent static ignitions in solvent handling areas.

Biography:

Dr. Kelly Robinson founded Electrostatic Answers, an engineering consulting company dedicated to eliminating injury and waste from static electricity. Kelly has over 35 years of industrial experience solving manufacturing problems and commercializing new products. His accomplishments include:
• IEEE Life Fellow cited for contributions to the static performance of manufacturing operations.
• National Fire Protection Assoc. (NFPA) – Chair, Committee on Static Electricity
• Associate Editor, Journal of Electrostatics, a leading peer-reviewed journal on static electricity.
• Electrostatics Society of America (ESA) Honorary Life Member
• PhD in Electrical Engineering
• Professional Engineer (NYS)
