IEEE PES ESPAÑA | [Webinar(9º) 21.09.2023] | THE ENERGY TRANSITION | Towards a DECARBONIZED ENERGY | Supplying EV charging directly from the Transmission Grid
Estimados Miembros del Capítulo IEEE PES ESPAÑA y de la comunidad de sistemas eléctricos de potencia,
Dear IEEE PES Spain Members and Colleagues from power and energy community,
Continuing with the [Webinar] series on the topic
LA TRANSICIÓN ENERGETICA | Hacia una ECONOMIA DESCARBONIZADA
THE ENERGY TRANSITION | Towards a DECARBONIZED ECONOMY
The energy transition towards a decarbonized economy will present a relevant challenge and a crucial transformation faced by our Society; Decelerating climate change effects is becoming a moral commitment.
As a society, we are part of the decarbonized energy process that goes through the electrification of the economy and it is supported by renewables within a sustainable energy model.
This means a change of paradigm which heads towards an immediate exciting future full of challenges at all levels associated with flexibility in its widest conception. It is assumed that a change of paradigm, that requires changing the focus from active based asset management towards the digitalization that ensures resiliency and security for the future electric systems.
In this context, we need to contribute and stimulate the exchange of ideas from different perspectives and experiences, creating a framework of reflection through these series of webinars. The expected benefit and impact is the identification of opportunities within the complexity associated with the change of paradigm.
In this [Webinar] Jorge Martins (REN- Portuguese TSO) will share with us the proposal to supply EV charging directly from the HV system.
Title: Supplying EV charging directly from the Transmission Grid
Content: The rise of electric vehicle (EV) adoption requires the development of a widespread charging infrastructure. The application of classic solutions is most likely insufficient to ensure the required pace of transition. To address this challenge, REN has developed SPEED-E, a new grid connection solution capable of supplying high power to electric vehicle charging stations, directly from the Transmission Grid. This innovative solution consists of a small-scale substation that connects to an existing Very High Voltage Transmission Line, using a special connection scheme, which enables increased operational flexibility and reliability. The substation uses Power Voltage Transformers to transform directly Very High Voltage to Low Voltage, thus circumventing the conventional multiple step-down voltage approach. REN has deployed a proof-of-concept project in Portugal, connected to an existing 220kV transmission line, which has been in operation since 2018. In parallel, the European Patent has been granted in April 2021 and is currently valid in 32 European countries. The main differentiating features of this solution versus the conventional distribution grid power supply solutions include: (i) 'virtually unlimited' power available at each site; (ii) sustainability of the solution by enabling a new use of the existing Transmission Grid; (iii) modularity and scalability, reducing investment risk; and (iv) superior quality of service associated to the Transmission Grid.
