  • IEEE SD SCAMP Milestone Update: Kathy H. Hayashi

    • From Robert Colburn, Manager of IEEE History Center:

      It is my great pleasure to inform you that the IEEE Board of Directors has approved the IEEE History Committee’s recommendation that your proposal be recognized as an IEEE Milestone with the following citation:

      The Single Chip A-Series Mainframe Processor (SCAMP), 1987

      In 1987, Unisys fabricated its first single-chip A-series CPU: SCAMP (Single Chip A-series Mainframe Processor) using advanced VLSI system design, CMOS physical design, silicon test, and memory packaging technologies. By optimizing power/performance, resilience, scalability, and maintainability, the A-series mainframe computer ran in a PC desktop form factor. Its inherent flexibility allowed its proprietary operating system to run alongside UNIX, and provided an architectural bridge to these Open Systems.

      Congratulations to you and the San Diego Section Section on this significant achievement. The approval of an IEEE Milestone is an important recognition of the lasting impact and historical significance of a technological accomplishment, and IEEE appreciates the collaboration and effort that made this proposal possible.

      Citations approved by the IEEE Board of Directors should be considered final. Any changes beyond minor grammatical corrections will require additional review and approval, which could delay the Milestone process.

  • New Event Initiative: IEEE SD Innovation Forum: AI in San Diego - Kathy H. Hayashi

  • IEEE EPS Packaging Design and Characterization Summer School: Fund Requested 1000$.

    To close the remaining budget gap and ensure successful execution of the summer school, we respectfully request $1,000 in financial support from the IEEE San Diego Section. 

    This support will help us provide a high-quality educational experience, maintain free registration for student attendees, and strengthen engagement between IEEE, local universities, and the semiconductor industry. 

    In addition, we would appreciate any suggestions from the ExCom regarding potential sponsors or additional funding sources that may be interested in supporting this initiative.

  • Sponsorship/Partnership Request: EcoNovaHacks

    Dear IEEE San Diego Section Team,

    My name is Praneel Kona, and I’m a high school student organizing EcoNovaHacks, a two-day environmental sustainability hackathon for high school students taking place September 5–6 at the UCSD campus in San Diego. We’re bringing together around 100 ambitious high schoolers to tackle real-world sustainability challenges using math, data, engineering, and technology.

    IEEE’s commitment to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity strongly aligns with the mission of EcoNovaHacks. Our event is designed to give students a hands-on opportunity to use technical problem-solving for social and environmental impact. By partnering with us, IEEE would help inspire the next generation of engineers, researchers, and innovators while supporting students as they build practical solutions to urgent sustainability problems.

    In terms of what we can offer:
    • Logo placement on event materials and our website
    • Social media recognition before, during, and after the event
    • Direct visibility with around 100 STEM-focused high school students and their families
    • Opportunities for IEEE members to participate as judges, mentors, or speakers

    We’re a student-run event with a lean budget, and sponsorships start at $500. We’re also very open to non-monetary partnerships, such as providing mentors, judges, speakers, workshop support, or educational materials for attendees.
